Did you know most people have parasites that are affecting our health without even being aware? Parasites are a common cause of chronic health issues, are something many may not think about. Dr. Michael Karlfeldt, ND, PhD provides a brief discussion on these organisms, some surprising statistics, and how they affect our overall health.

Staying healthy not only counts with regular physical activity, balanced diet and adequate sleep, but good health also includes taking precautions that aid in prevention of certain health concerns.

One of these issues is the presence of parasites. Parasites affect the health of millions of people annually, causing debilitating and sometimes deadly conditions. Sometimes these organisms live inside the human body for years.

These organisms live inside our bodies and feed off our cells, the food we consume and even the vitamin and mineral supplements we take. It is a common myth that parasites typically occur only in third-world countries. However, this idea is simply not true.

Studies kept at the CDC offer evidence that as many as 85 to 95% adults suffer from at least one type of parasite. This health concern is considered the number one health risk in North America. That means you, I, and the majority of people are dealing with these organisms on a continual basis. A lot of health issues we experience may be due to parasites.

Dr. Ross Anderson, one of the U.S.’s foremost parasitic infection specialists believes that the single most un-diagnosed health challenge in the history of the human race is parasites. This statement is based on his 20+ years of experience with more than 20,000 patients.

Dr. Peter Wina, Chief of Pathobiology at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research states that we have a tremendous parasite problem in the U.S., that simply isn’t being addressed. As first-world citizens, we regard ourselves on “being clean”, and don’t like to talk about things that we perceive as “dirty” such as parasites. However, with parasites affecting us in so many different ways, this situation needs to be acknowledged and address.

There are two different major groupings of parasites:

  1. Larger worms which occur in a variety of types such as tape and thread worms
  2. Protozoa, which also come in many different variations and are microscopic organisms
